Summary: A really great book
Comment: When I first bought this book, I didn't know what I was getting into! My friend suggested me it, but then another told me that she didn't really much enjoy reading it, and she found it boring, so I wasn't sure what to expect! What I found was a wonderful adventure story about a young girl named Hollis Woods!

This book is divided into 2 parts! Around every other chapter they switch from " Pictures " to " Chapters "! Picutres were about her past and her memories, and chapters went on like it was the present normal time! In the end they both combine together and create a warming ending!

I won't tell you every thing about the book, but just a simple summary, to read the whole thing I suggest you to read it yourself! The book is about a girl named Hollis Woods who's an orphan!

She was a tricky one, every home she was ever sent to she ran away from it! One home was an amazing home though, a home that toke her in and accepted her as a family member, it was the home of the Old Man and Steven! As you read the " pictures " you'll see how she loved that home and grew up in it, and how it wasn't like all the other homes she had gone to, where she was treated like a pile of dirt!

But Hollis also ran away from that home, even though she loved it dearly! Why? You'll have to read to find out! The other part of the story is about what happened after Hollis ran away! You see, Hollis was an amazing artist, she loved to draw, and so she was sent to the home of an art teacher after she ran away from the Old Man's home!

The home, belonging to Josie, she also found nice! Josie was old though, and her memory span was short, Josie forgot about school and all of those things, and even though Hollis could mighty well run away she didn't, for she knew Josie needed her! If she was to leave Josie may turn on the fire someday, forget about it, and the whole cabin ( house ) would come crashing down!

But soon the adoption agency found out about Josie's short memory, and wanted to take Hollis away! So with Josie and Josie's cat, Hollis ran, she toke as much as she could carry and ran to the Old Man's house using Josie's car, for it was winter and the Old Man and the family always went to their winter house!

They stayed there till something happen, something that changed Hollis's life.

I hope I didn't make the story sound too confusing, but fun and enjoyable to read :)

Summary: Wonderful Story of a Wonderful Character
Comment: Pictures of Hollis Woods is the very moving story of an abandoned girl who has difficulty fitting into foster homes and is constantly getting in trouble for running away. What we get in this novel are two narratives: one in the present as Hollis tries to fit in with Josie, an older woman slowing succumbing to dementia; and one in the form of flashbacks told through description of pictures Hollis has drawn which tells the story of the previous summer when Hollis thought she had finally found a home. Slowly, these two stories are drawn together as Hollis tries to protect herself and Josie as well as come to terms with the events of the previous summer.

All in all, Ms. Giff has written a wonderful novel. The switching between the two plots in handled well and Hollis is a beautifully drawn character. She is difficult and introverted, but she is an artist and is ultimately able to overcome her defensiveness and become part of a family--even an extended family. I would highly recommend this novel to young and old alike.

Summary: Beautiful imagery and characterization, not just for kids!
Comment: As a high school English teacher of a class in adolescent literature, I picked up the book on tape for a recent trip. While yes, the story is a bit predictable and too neatly tied up, I was shocked to come here and find it recommended for 9-12 year olds. The shifts in time back and forth, extensive (but lovely) imagery, lengthy discussions of art, and elderly characters seem above that age range. I found it pleasing as an adult and would actually start my recommendation at 12 and move up from there. (Perhaps that's why the elementary teacher's review is so negative).

It is a lovely book, worthy read, with excellent characterization, especially of Josie, the elderly retired art teacher suffering from memory loss. It's a great way to show kids the value of the elderly population and of art as well.
