Summary: My favorite childhood book
Comment: Bright April introduced this middle-class, suburban, caucasian girl in the late 1950's to life in post-war Philadelphia as experienced by an African-American Girl Scout with a charming family, friends, classmates, and rivals. I loved the beautiful, chalk-style illustrations of all Ms. DiAngeli's books, but Bright April was my favorite by far. Perhaps that is why I've become a City Planner, and a city resident. Most important, this book made me aware of racial issues and concerns and opened my eyes to a world other than what I had known before.
