Summary: FUNNY & REALISTIC LOOK INTO THE SINGLE THIRTYSOMETHING LIFE
Comment: Being in the Last Chance Saloon scares the characters in this novel by Marian Keyes.

There's beautiful, responsible, tidy Katherine who endures relationship after relationship of failure and decides to take on an "ice queen" air about her. Katherine's friends joke with her that she has fabulous matching bra and panty sets but nobody to see her in them.

There's also Tara who is battling a slight weight problem and in a dead-end relationship with Thomas who constantly monitors her eating and criticizes her weight. Once, Tara ate a whole loaf of bread and rushed out to buy another loaf before Thomas realized her binge. Tara, afraid of ending up in the Last Chance Saloon, refuses to leave Thomas and keeps making excuses for the way he is.

Then there's fashion-conscious Fintan who has been in a serious and happy relationship with his "Italian pony" boyfriend, Sandro. But Fintan fears he is also in the Last Chance Saloon when he is diagnosed with a life-threatening disease.

Over a course of a year the three friends must pull together and lend advice to face their fears of ending up alone or in Fintan's case, dead.

The author created a couple of sub-plots throughout the novel which had me wondering about their importance to the story, but in the end the sub-plots all tied together to the story's climax and twistful ending.

This was my first Marian Keyes novel and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were funny, real and likeable. While reading this novel I was so enthralled to learn what would happen to the three friends and how their dilemma would all work out. I was sad to see the novel end but the author does an excellent job of wrapping it up.

After reading Last Chance Saloon, I will definitely be putting more Marian Keyes novels on my to-be-read list.

Summary: A Year in the Life of London Singles
Comment: If you love chick lit but are yearning for something a bit deeper and more complex, take a chance on Marian Keyes. This was my first book of hers and I was totally captivated by her unforgettable characters and unique storyline twists.

What is it about the Irish that make them such wonderful storytellers? The plot sounds very simple---two single women and one gay man, all best friends since their childhood in a small Irish village, find happiness and heartache as professional thirtysomethings in London. Sounds simple, but in the hands of a great storyteller this is a can't-put-down novel.

The situations faced by Tara, Katherine, and Fintan are so true-to-life and yet so heartbreaking, that the reader feels compelled to hold their hands and walk with them through every step of their angst. You will meet Tara Butler who suffers from low self-esteem and the misfortune to be living with the boyfriend from hell, Katherine Casey, the ice princess who has let a mysterious event from her past color and destroy any relationship she enters, and Fintan O'Grady, the flamboyant homosexual who has found his soul mate but risks losing everything to a terminal illness. Not only are these characters remarkable creations, but Keyes gives us as fine a lineup of secondary characters as can be found in any novel. Most notable is Lorcan Larkin, the enigmatic actor whose story parallels that of the main characters and finally collides with one of them in a heartbreaking climax.

This is a story of modern day singles, but it is so much more. It is a testament to friendship and the ties that give us strength. It is a look at the long shadows a family can cast and the ways people can take control of their own destiny. Most importantly, it is about learning to respect yourself and to live each day as if it were your last chance.

Summary: Very disappointing
Comment: I've read all of Marian Keyes' books, and I am sorry to say that I first saw a downhill slide with Angels, and it continued with this book. Full of cliches (as another reviewer noted) and the token gay friend, it seemed like a half-hearted effort. I have Sushi for Beginners yet to read but I am a little apprehensive about it-I'll give it a try, but if it's as bad as Last Chance Saloon and Angels, I'm afraid I will have to give up on Keyes, who used to be one of my favorite modern writers.
