Summary: Powerful and heartbreaking
Comment: Mystic River is the first Lehane novel I've read. It will NOT be the last.

This novel is amazing. As a mystery, it's predictable. I knew pretty well who had killed Katie Marcus by about page 150. But, really, that's not what the book is about. It's about pain and fragility of the human condition, as all good crime novels are about.

The plot is pretty simple. Three childhood friends are reunited by the murder of a young woman. Jimmy Marcus, the girl's father, is an ex-con who has been on the straight and narrow for years. Sean Divine is the cop investigating the murder. Dave Boyle, who as a boy was kidnaped and abused, is related to Jimmy by marriage; he's also the prime suspect.

As the novel progresses, it's obvious that this murder is just the beginning of a series of tragedies, as each character tries to decipher how best to handle this awful crime. The conclusion is heartbreaking and sickening, and completely unforgettable.

An excellent novel.

Summary: A liteary Tour de Force
Comment: Has it ever bothered you that the mystery /thriller genre that you so love and enjoy does not get the respect that it so richly deserves;how many times have you opened the book section of your newspaper only to find few mystery reviews if at all.I urge all those who find the genre unfashionable to buy this book- it will change your mind.

Michael Connelly once said that Dennis Lehane is "the heir apparent";.he was right; now however he is "the heir". This book is about good and evil;friendship and hatred;love and loyalty;truths and lies;right and wrong; life and death;hopes and fears. Lehane works these facets into his characters in a manner so powerful and masterful that it leaves you breathless and craving for more. His prose simply crackles off the page and forces you to reread paragraphs simply for their sheer beauty and brilliance. His voice magiaclly transports you to the heart of the action in a way that you feel you know the territory he is describing all your life. This a psychological thriller so deftly plotted,so taut and suspenseful that the boundaries of the genre are pushed to their outer limits.

Our parents handed us down Chandler,Macdonald, and Hammett.I predict in the same manner Lehane will be of the first we will pass to ours. You have been warned-masterpieces such as Mystic River come along so seldom -so buy this book , enjoy it , tell all your friends about it- Lehane deserves a wider audience and greater recognition ; this book will surely give him both.5 stars are not eneogh,it deserves much more.

Summary: Who Needs This Garbage?
Comment: Does the world really need more books about pyschos and serial killers? First of all, it's become a boring cliche, and Mystic River is almost interchangeable beyond some details with too many other dreary and disgusting (non)mysteries. Second, does the world really need this theme perpetuated? Lehane may have made a financial killing here, but in spreading the "romance" of pyschokillers he's done us all a disservice. Maybe this is corny, idealistic raving, but you've got to start somewhere in trying to make the world a better place. And anyway, in the end, this book is dull. I've got to believe its success is pure hype and not based on its (lack of) literary merits.
