Summary: Avi's entrancing gem of a story
Comment: It is rare to find a book in which the talking animals act just exactly as you would expect talking animals TO act. In this book a small mouse sets out on a very believable mouse quest. She wishes to find a larger food source for her family while avoiding being eaten by owls, foxes, etc. The setting and main character are not all that different from, "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH". In both cases a small female mouse must fight to save other mice. It's a simple book containing a very good sense of what courage is. There's a lovely section in which Poppy tries to decide whether to carry on her quest or turn back, and her decision to carry on doesn't spring from some fiery belief, but the quiet acknowledgement that it is the right thing to do. The illustrations, by the way, are charming. Poppy is delightfully rendered as a small and charming creature. The map at the front is also very helpful in letting the reader get their bearings. All in all, a great book by Avi.

'You're scared of that other owl!" said Poppy. "I know something about it that you don't know," she said. Mr. Ocax was frustrated. "I'll tell you- it's a fake owl! The high and mighty Mr. Ocax is afraid of a fake owl!" Poppy said with great confidence. This is one of the great conversations in the book, Poppy, that leads up to great conflict and the struggles that the whole family of mice face against Mr. Ocax, the great ruler of Dimwood Forest.

Poppy is a mouse that is determined to expose Mr. Ocax as a coward and a liar to the mouse family. The mice live in an old abandoned barn called Gray House. The problem is that the food supply is running out, and the mice may starve. They need to move as quickly as possible, but there is one obstacle- Ocax. Mr. Ocax has found out a secret at the new house that the mice want to move into. In this great fiction book, Poppy must face her fears and overcome Mr. Ocax. On her journey, she meets new animals that ironically help her, it's up to Poppy to expose Ocax, but it is not going to be easy for her.

This was an awesome book because of the way it was written. I would recommend this book to people who like Avi's writing, and for people who like adventure. The book is well put together. Every cliffhanger is answered, and after one paragraph, you want to read more. Any person about seven or older who have read other books by Avi, or have just started reading, would love this book. None of these chapters were boring because there were surprises on every page. For example, towards the end, Poppy scampered to New House. I remember that on the page it started on, it was only a description, then Ocax arrived and chaos arose. Well, I don't want to ruin the ending for you, so you are just going to have to read it for yourself. You can't go wrong if you do! Please take my advice and read Poppy, I guarantee you will like it.
