Summary: I couldn't put this book down!
Comment: I stayed up hours past bedtime, unable to put this book down. It consumed me as I read it commuting on the metro to and from the office which, for me, is the sign of a great read. This story is a masterfully crafted drama dealing with the events before and after a trial, as narrated by a midwife's teen-age daughter. After reading this book, I better understand the reasons why some women choose a midwife instead of a physician for delivering their babies. In the book, the author captures the culture of midwives and the families that utilize their services very well. He creates a gripping story about how people can be involved in the same event and yet see and experience dramatically different outcomes--the emergency c-section at the heart of the story comes to mind. Mr. Bohjalian has written an intriguing, gripping novel -- and I hope he writes more of them soon!

Summary: May be the next To Kill a Mockingbird
Comment: This is one of the most superb novels I have ever read. The characters are beautifully drawn, the prose flows, and the story is absolutely gripping. Choosing to tell this tale from the perspective of a 14 year old girl was a wonderful idea. This is a courtroom drama at its best-- but more importantly, it is a poignant story that emphasizes how fragile we all are.Everyone makes mistakes-- most of us don't have to give up the profession we love because of those mistakes. The topic was absolutely fascinating. The author really captures the beauty and miracle of childbirth-- while exposing a lot of prejudices that the medical community holds. This is a novel of depth that I was touched by in a most intelligent way. This book explores a lot of relatioonshiips-- mother and daughter-- husband and wife-- midwife and patient. I think people may be misled by the title- but they shouldn't be. This is a beautiful book that says a lot about the human condition, beyond the mere story of a midwife on trial.

Summary: Didn't get interesting
Comment: I found myself bored with this book really quickly. I then found myself to start skimming....I had to force myself to start the book again and really give it a try. I did, and thought the book was boring and not developed. I should have continued to skim it and not waste my time
