Summary: Good, but I ruined it...
Comment: I was looking forward to finally getting While I Was Gone read and alphabetized on my bookshelf,... And while I found the book very engrossing and the writing superb, I couldn't keep my mind off "who-done-it" and it did spoil the fun for me.

While I Was Gone tells the story of a restless wife, Jo Becker, who, after 25 years of marriage to her husband, Daniel, still can't find her bliss. Nothing ever seems to suit her. Her career as a veterinarian is rewarding, but sometimes being stuck in a routine bothers Jo. Then one day, a blast from the past comes sweeping through the vet door, and Jo's world is turned on its side. Talk about something to spice things up...

Jo's blast comes in the form of Eli Mayhew, her former roommate from 30 years ago when they lived in a group house with five others during college. It was a magical time for Jo, despite the secrets she carried with her, until it tragically ended with the death of one of her best friends. Now with Eli back on the frontburner, those memories of the person she was and the life she was trying to escape from come back with full-force and threaten to destroy the boring life she leads now, the one she thought could use a little excitement.

I'm sure my rating would have been a five if only I had the pleasure of finding out the mystery on my own. Once the mystery was revealed, I was bummed -- I missed out on the delicious shock-value I look forward to in books like these. I think a major part of the appeal of this book is the "who-done-it" and is best left for the reader to relish alone. Excellent writing skills and a great storyline helped pull me along despite knowing the outcome.

Summary: Not Sue Miller's Best Work
Comment: While I Was Gone is the story of a fifty-something professional woman(she's a veterinarian), with a great husband, terrific daughters and a distant past that comes back to haunt her. During the 60's, the main character, Jo, lived in a group house where one of her roommates was brutally murdered. Now, many years later, another housemate, Eli Mayhew, moves to her small New England town and Jo gets caught up in her past and with this man. This story reads like a soap opera or movie of the week. Jo continually makes bad decisions that almost ruin her marriage and the relationship she has with her daughters. I found the story line very frustrating and at times unbelievable. The characters were not as well drawn and developed as they should have been and their thoughts and actions never made sense to me. Ms Miller is a good writer, with a wonderful ear for dialogue. But, this novel got bogged down in detail and came to a very unsatisfying ending. Readers of Sue Miller will probably like this book, but it left me flat.

Summary: An interesting story that keeps you guessing
Comment: The main character seems to be one that at times you can relate to, and at others, your questioning her thoughts and actions. All in all it's a good book that has some shocking twists to it. The only thing I didn't like about the book was the ending, I felt that it was untrue to the character and left open.
In the end,it's a good book worth reading.
