Summary: THE LEGACY OF MICHAEL SHAARA CONTINUES...
Comment: ...through his son Jeff. THE LAST FULL MEASURE may never live up to THE KILLER ANGELS, but this novel is compelling in it's own right. As Michael Shaara was able to do with the battle of Gettysburg, Jeff Shaara puts us on an emotional and spiritual level with the men who fought in the last two years of the Civil War and beyond, while once again making sure that the real-life events are told with almost 100% accuracy! You're with Robert E. Lee on his death bed; you're with Joshua Lawerence Chamberlain as his men storm the defenses of Petersburg; and you're with U.S. Grant at Cold Harbor. Jeff is a fine novelist, and his father's legacy will never be forgotten! Followed by the novels GONE FOR SOLDIERS and RISE TO REBELLION, all of which were preceded by Jeff's first novel, GODS AND GENERALS! Grade: A+

Summary: The Road to Appomattox.
Comment: As "The Killer Angels," this book is history written as a novel. It tells of the last year of the Civil War. Jeff Shaara uses historical figures as his main characters. The typical best-selling historical novel presents fictional main characters engaged in a fictitious story that includes bona fide historical figures and events. Authors such as Margaret Mitchell and John Jakes come to mind. Shaara's approach is unusual and effective. It enables the reader to get inside the minds of people such as Robert E. Lee, U. S. Grant, and Abraham Lincoln. The artistic license in play is arguable. Regardless, however, of the strict accuracy of the dialogue and introspection, the essence of the characters is on target, and supported by reputable nonfiction sources. The story unfolds slowly; capturing some of the tedium of a conflict that seems endless. There are no ruffles and flourishes or tacky appeals to patriotism here. Only a grim determination to persevere. Sprinkled along the way are maps of the battles described. This is also unusual in a novel. Thankfully, Shaara doesn't re-write history. Consequently, there isn't much suspense or surprise plot developments. The violence is only of the battlefield. Flying in the face of historical romance novels, the only romantic love mentioned is of husband and wife. No heaving bosoms to report. Presenting the human side of history without artificial melodrama compensates the reader for the lack of fictional devices typical of popular novels. The book is good as entry level reading for readers new to Civil War history, including young adults. History buffs that already know the facts can enjoy the book as entertaining reading that breathes new life into a familiar subject. ;-)

Summary: Poignant Finale to the Civil War Trilogy
Comment: The Last Full Measure ends the Civil War trilogy of Gods and Generals and The Killer Angels. Jeff Shaara continues his father's work with a novel that is as heartwrenching as it is historically accurate. It was interesting, but when I first read the novel, I happened to be visiting the areas described like Spotsylvania, the Wilderness and Petersburg, and Shaara brings those fight vividly to life. This time he focusses on 3 main characters, Joshua Chamberlain, Robert E. Lee & US Grant, picking up right after Gettysburg. As the war rages on to its 3rd year, Shaara accurately plays out the desperation of the Confederacy and the despair of Lee as he struggles to equip an army without food or equipment available. He also shows Grant in the light that many had never seen before, showing him as both the military genius and capable of making mistakes. Yet it is his characterization of Chamberlain that is masterful, showing the schoolteachers final evolution from good officer to excellent general, and from battlefield commander to dreadfully wounded casualty. The Last Full Measure is a masterful work by an author who is taking the field of historical fiction by storm.
