Summary: Temporary Satisfaction
Comment: Pike's fans will enjoy this book-even though it is only just above mediocre. This novel, which had been postponed for close to seven years, will probably get postponed reactions too. 'That was good!' 'That was so contrived!' But still, the thrill of having a new Pike book will help quench his fans' thirst for more-temporarily!
David Lennon has just returned home from two months in New York. A trip that drained him, so what he does not need is to find a body on the beach. Nor does he need to hear that Satanism is involved, or that he is the prime suspect. He begins his own investigation and gets some very strange answers.
The only thing David wants to do is finish the cover design for the vampire novel that the publishers claim will be a bestseller. This story-within-the-story works until its abrupt and forced ending. Meanwhile, the main story drags out its ending. Much explanation-not enough action. But the explanation does sort of help readers to understand the lack of emotion in the story. Most of the time, I did not care about anything but the answers. Good answers, but really not developed beyond the outline stage. A good story, but too forced at the end. Better than the last three novels before Pike's four-year hiatus. And the ending ties with 'The Last Vampire 6' for the worst Pike conclusion ever. (Though rumor has it that Pike is planning more books in 'The Last Vampire' series, so he could easily redeem himself there. And actually, 'The Last Vampire 6' had a great epilogue...just was not able to redeem the rest of the book.)
The book rates an extra star for the way Pike describes some of the characters' eyes...one character has gray eyes with bits of green...Pike compares them to stones with moss on them.

Summary: Eh...only mediocre
Comment: I'm a huge fan of Christopher Pike from when I was about 12 till now, at 26. I've always found his plots to be creative and his main charecters human but with something extra to make them...more. I personally love the story within a story plot device that he does.
I think that this book though was trying to do too much, and ended up doing not enough for me. I do have to say that I found the whole David/Sienna charecterizations very well done, though not his best. I just feel like the book was rushed, forced and missing wayyyyyy too much. The end was too trite and came across as the only way that he could have tied the plots together. There wasn't enough done, in my opinion, with the story w/in this story, or the pictures that were coming to David's mind about what to put on the front charecter. There was too much left unexplained with, as I said, the trite explanation of an evil creature--no real explanation of the nature of it, just sort of a bad guy from Hell feel.
On the other hand, I did feel that he raised some interesting questions. Well, ok, one about divine forgiveness. Sort of an interesting play on that theme that saved the story for me. I'm just sort of wondering though if perhaps Mr. Pike isn't running out of ideas OR if he has them, but needs more time to develop them and less pressure from publishers or whatever. It was a book with a lot of potential, but not enough fulfillment.

Summary: twists and turns galore..
Comment: I have to say.. being obsessed with pike from as early as I can remember (I am 28 yrs old now), I was ecstatic to see that he started writing for adult readers. I am now reading 'season of passage'! I thought I read ALL of his YA books.. His books still leave a lasting impression on me to this day. I picked up blind mirror and read it in 3 days. I enjoyed it very much, however the plot twists drove me a bit batty. I was so frazzled I actually skipped to the last two chapters to find out what happens. Yes, I know I cheated but the plot twists were NEVER ENDING! skipping to the end and going back actually may help you understand character motives. In this book I actually thought skipping ahead did me some justice.. categorically it actually didn't ruin the story for me. As you read this book you will see that the story gets more and more frustrating.. in a good way.. but also in a bad one. How do I mean? well, I think pike left some serious ends untied. He opened too many doors but didn't see the justice in closing them as the story progressed. When you meet some of his characters in the book, you will understand. I kept asking myself "what happened to them?! what made them do this?! how much did they know about the truth behind their actions!?".. some characters (such as the reverand, sierra's mom, dad and julie could have easily had 3 chapters each dedicated to exploring their characters). The ending left me wondering and saddened.. and with many questions.. I just hope pike makes a sequel to clear up my thoughts!
