Summary: I just finished reading PUSH NOT THE RIVER
Comment: The characters are still romping around in my head. I want a sequel to this book. I want it now. LOL When I picked up this book, I knew nothing about Polish history, but as I read the book and saw the spirit in the Polish population in the late 1700s, I recognized it as the same spirit we watched in the early 1980s when Lech Walesa stood up to the Communist government.

Based on real people and the events that took place in Poland from 1792 thru 1794, PUSH NOT THE RIVER is a must read for anyone who enjoys historical fiction. It has it all, three dimensional characters, love, hate, greed, more twists and turns than a lonely mountain road, life, death, deception, and hope, above all, hope.

Summary: A Must Read for Those Researching Polish Genealogy
Comment: Push Not The River has been described as Poland's "Gone With the Wind" and a better analogy I cannot imagine. It's a very moving story set in Poland 1792-1794 (during the time of the Third of May Constitution). The author did a great deal of research to make the setting of the story authentic to the time and place. The characters are real. The story is about a Countess but just like GWTW dipicts the lives/roles of slaves as well as wealthy plantation owners, so does this story give insight into the lives of the landed gentry, the military, and the peasants. It has romance, intrigue, violence, and betrayal. The areas the story takes place in are: Sochaczew, Praga, Warsaw, Opole, and Czestochowa.

Those doing Polish genealogy research will find the book especially enlightening. It will give you a good sense of what the lives of your ancestors in Poland were like. They will become more than just names and dates on the family tree as you begin to understand the turbulent times that they lived through. My first thought when I finished this book was... "I wonder if I could construct the family trees of Jan, Anna, and Zophia!" Who knows... they may be relatives of yours!!!

Summary: The LIBRARY JOURNAL Review
Comment: "At the end of the 18th century, the Polish nobility watched nervously as French peasants toppled their king. Some nobles advocated reforms extending rights to the lower classes, while others insisted on maintaining absolute power even though it entailed aligning themselves with Catherine Empress of Russia. Against this tumultuous background, Anna Maria Berezowska faces her own turmoil. Left an orphan at 17, she moves to her aunt and uncle's estate and meets Jan Stelnicki, a count who supports reform. Unfortunately, their mutual attraction is resented by Anna's cousin, Zofia, who wants Jan for herself. Anna's life is further complicated when she is forced into marriage with a man interested only in her fortune.

Even though misunderstanding and coincidences keep Anna and Jan apart, their ultimate union is as certain as Poland's demise. Based on an actual 18th century diary, the narrative . . . holds readers because of the cast of well-developed characters and the need to see how Anna and her young son will survive the latest crisis.

While public library patrons of Polish ancestry may feel a special affinity for this first novel, other historical [fiction] fans will enjoy it as well."
