Summary: A fast paced detective series.
Comment: This book was my first reading of a Shane Scully novel. It was good enough to entice me to buy the other two novels. Since I read the last book first, it is difficult to compare to the previous novels.
This book was very fast paced. It would have helped if I read the other novels first. However, the plot was enjoyable. Cannell has an excellent writing style.
Of the three Scully novels, I feel Viking Funeral was the best.
I am looking forward to the next installment.

Summary: A Man's Work Is Never Done!
Comment: Back for a third time, Shane Scully just can't just settle into his work at LAPD. Things keep getting in the way. He overhears the fiancee of a family friend joke about have poisoned his first two wives. He decides to check the guy out and not only is it not a joke, the guy is a protected government witness. Then his son, after being released from on of the LA gangs at a younger age, gets involved with the sister of one of the leaders of one of the gangs that is at war in LA. And, wouldn't you know it Shane's wife is head of the LAPD Task force trying to stop the gang warfare. She is not amused by this or several other things going on between Shane, his son and the gang leader. And then, just to further occupy his time, Shane gets involved in a sting operation which involves producing a movie. Doesn't leave much time for detective work, but it does keep things jumping throughout the book. Cannell is a good story teller and he does manage to weave the various threads of the story into an entertaining read.
Rating: 3
Summary: a highly unprobable yet quite fun and readable story
Comment: the story is a wild ride, kinda ridiculous but fun. have read most of cannell's books, there's a format could easily be traced. he's a hollywood insider and trying very hard to write some mob stories. a top-notched storyteller but sometimes inevitably turned his stories into too dime-novel quality and depth. all the stories are quite readable and full of fun but once you have finished them, you just don't want to read them again after, say, 2 years later? like "monte cristo," god, could i believe myself that i've read it again and again at least 5 times during the past 30 years?
