Summary: Great read!!!!
Comment: This is a book that I bought on the basis of the reviews I read. Actually, if it had not been for the great reviews,I probably would not have kept reading the book. I'm very glad I did.
It is the story of Ruby Lennox, from conception in 1952 through her 40th year. Through footnotes in the form of chapters she takes you back to the turn of the century and the lives of her maternal family. Her grat-grandmother, Alice, grandmother, Nell, mother, Bunty and herself. Then there are all the sisters, cousins, aunts uncles, father and so on. There is a lot of story here.
It is quite rewarding to read and funny, yet as the story moves on it is quite sad and disturbing. The author has a way of pulling you in to the life of Ruby Lennox. You won't be disappointed. Give this book a chance. It was great!!!!
The only complaint I have is that I wish there had been a family tree to refer to at the beginning of the book. It became confusing keeping track of everyone.

Summary: A brilliantly book for the daughters of all our mothers...
Comment: Rarely do I read a book more that once; but like Ruby Lennox repeatedly searching for the 'right life', so I am drawn to this story again and again to submerge myself in it's thoroughly intoxicating and humourous web of female existence!
Through Kate Atkinson'companionable story telling, we follow a family of women through the ages. We examine their follies, personalities and often their sad lives, as they allow circumstance, fate and the age they live in to dictate their position in the world. From major events such as world wars, to personal traumas as bad marriage choices, each woman either unhappily accepts or silently battles against her situation, simultaneously hindered and aided by a long line of inherited genes and social beliefs. Only a handful achieve happiness by living for themselves and shunning the expected 'norms' of the time. Together with a relative who immigrated to Canada, one who hid in Austrailia and an irrational, irritable woman who found freedom in her Alzeihmers, Ruby finds her real life in a home she chose.
An inspiring book for women of all ages. We learn from our strong and beautiful female ancestors. We admire them for living in ages confining for their free spirits. We thank them, learn from them and move on!

Summary: Thoughts On "Behind the Scenes at the Museum"
Comment: "Behind the Scenes at the Museum" was an incredible novel, written by Kate Atkinson. The story is about a family of women, a grandmother, and a daughter, and their extremely dysfunctional family. The mother is having an affair, the main character's sister is overly sexually liberated, and there is a big suprise as well. This book is beautifully written, is very interesting and never dull, and will probably make you cry. You probably think this is typical chick literature, but it's not, it's just my writing style and my inability to relate when I think something is really "awesome". This book is really wonderful, and I promise you, if you buy it and read it, you will love it. And, even if you aren't female, and are not a WWF watching, sports loving, beer guzzling "man's man," you'll probably enjoy it as well. So, buy this book!
