Summary: Excellent
Comment: Alan Guth's 'Inflationary Universe' is one of the finest books I've read on cosmology. Written from the point of view of the person primary responsible for the formulation of the inflationary model, the book deftly leads the reader through the evolution of the theory. Starting from an idea which simply attempted to explain the absence of magnetic monopoles this idea quickly becomes a much more profound theory which is able to explain a number of heretofore inexplicable problems in modern cosmology. Like other great popular books written by the scientists who have made the discoveries they are describing ('The Double Helix' by James Watson comes to mind), the excitement and the anxiety associated with making a great scientific discovery are communicated to the reader very effectively by this author. I learned a great deal about big bang cosmology from this book, while at the same time I was immensely entertained by the human story.

Summary: The best and deepest popular book on cosmology available
Comment: Wow! What a great book. This is the clearest and deepest book on cosmology for the layman that I have ever read, and I've read a lot of them. I don't know whether previous books I've read just didn't explain it right or what, but before I reading this book, I was always disgruntled by inflationary theories of the universe, thinking
for some reason that they were ad hoc, devised out of the blue to explain the flatness problem. This is the first book on the subject that I've ever read that showed me that inflationary theories are
actually derived from more basic theories, and that they just HAPPEN to explain several different problems associated with the classical big bang theory. I was also very intrigued by Guth's explanation of how there is probably a fractal pattern of universes similar to our own that emerges out of the decay of the false vacuum. This is also the first time I've understood that the "multi-universe" proposals really ARE based on scientific theories, and weren't simply pulled out of thin air. A wonderful book that make a host of other books on cosmology look amateurish by comparison

Summary: Deep Proof of the Power of Science
Comment: If you ever doubted of the power of science in explaining facts that you thought were only possible to explain from a religious point of view, you need to read this book. The Inflation Theory, which is explained in detail to general public in this book by the main contributor of the theory, shows clearly to us that the reason can truly explain everything. This is no speculation, nor philosophy. The Inflation Theory is a consistent theory that explain how the universe emerge from the complete vacuum, the absolute nothing, and evolutes to what we see today; based only on the physics that can be easily demonstrated on high energy labs. Guth explains this theory in his book very clearly and keeping the subject interesting all the time. He shows also how the theory was developed by hard work and research, i.e., it wasn't a flash inside his mind that brought everything up. Also, this theory has been confirmed indirectly recently by deep collect of data of COBE-style projects. Even though some day this theory may be rejected, it will be remembered by its beautiful and concise way of explaining the origin of the Universe. By beautiful I mean the definition of Steven Weinberg to a possible final theory of the universe: a theory that we don't need to adjust "settings" so it can work as what we can see, just like the Big-Bang theory. The Inflation Theory doesn't need to be "configured" and it shows to us why the Big-Bang was in the way it must be to produce a universe like the one we observe.
