Summary: All speeches by Lysias, well presented
Comment: Lysias' speeches give some great insight into the Athenian society, and more specifically the court system. His speeches are packed with rhetoric and you can clearly see that he sometimes does the weirdest things to prove his client right. I had to translate three of these speeches and I have to say that it gets a little repetitive after a while: all speeches contain exactly the same kind of rhetoric and it seems that every detail and evidence is repeated at least three times by Lysias! But that is exactly what made these speeches so good: they were made to impress a court and in that way they are undoubtedly successful. For students, it is undoubtedly interesting but it would be a good idea not to let them translate too much of Lysias' texts: I could still bear reading three speeches but a lot more would have been overkill.
This book itself gives an excellent presentation of the speeches: all of them are printed, not in Greek but in a good English translation. Though sometimes the translations are a little too free, which may be difficult if you use the book as a translation aid. But yet I've had much profit from this book. It is also interesting to note that each speech is preceded by a nice introduction about the social background of the situation. This all adds to a useful and thorough presentation of Lysias' world, even if you just like to read the speeches without the Greek text.
