Comment: For the very youngest connoisseurs of fiction, Marie Hall Ets is truly a gift. Her themes are simple, often focusing on a child's perception of a single event or element in his or her life. Yet she explores that one theme to its fullest potential.

In this work, In the Forest, Ets is at her very best. We're led into the mind of a young boy celebrating his birthday. Through uncomplicated style and prose, the reader/listener experiences the fanciful imagination of the boy as he wanders through the forest. The drama builds gradually, adding animal characters who act as foils as well as companions to our hero, until the moment when his father appears to take him home. The magic is dispelled, and the animals retreat back into the forest of the child's imagination.
