Summary: Return to childhood...
Comment: 20 some years ago back in second grade was the first time I explored the exotic land of the whangdoodle. It was being read to my class by the teacher. I could not wait for reading time to find out the new problems the "Prock" was creating. Fast forward to 4 years ago I needed to find the book to share with my now 7 year old daughter. I remembered the title but was thinking it was by Dahl, due to a reference to the whangdoodle in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (my favorite movie). After finding it, and letting my daughter age a little to enjoy we began our exploration together. Due to a divorce it took us 10 months to finish but boy was it fun reading it to her those nights. We are now hoping that her teacher will use it as a class reading for everyone to enjoy. It brings back great memories both old and new and I think everyone will enjoy....My question is WHERE IS THE MOVIE?????

Summary: One of the most important books of all time!
Comment: I first read this book when I was about 12, and it left an indellible imprint on my mind. So much so that for many, many years afterward I searched libraries around the country trying to find it. The problem was, I couldn't remember the name of the book or the author, and I came up empty when I searched on all of the possible variations of names of creatures I could think of (I kept coming back to Pooh's Heffalump). It wasn't until I had access to the internet several years ago, and to the awesome search capabilities of Amazon.com, that I was able to find this magical and life-transforming book. The central theme is common in literature: a child in some sort of domestic peril searches for the meaning of life and for their place in it. The Harry Potter and Narnia books comes to mind as similar, equally important, examples of such fine literature. In each case, a child who is experiencing difficulty understanding and/or fitting in to the world in which he/she is suddenly stranded is mysteriously transported into a fantastical world full of wonder, beauty, happiness, love, and, inevitably, challenges. But instead of the confusing, unintelligible challenges they face in the real world, the fantasy world presents them with challenges they can identify with and conquer, challenges that ultimately serve to build their character and self-esteem, thus preparing them for life in the real world. And while all three of the books I mentioned offer this lesson in different but equally profound ways, and while I cherish and highly recommend them all, Julie Andrews' book touched me in a way the others didn't. To this day (I'm now 39) I get a warm fuzzy feeling when I think about the Whangdoole, with his slippers that constantly change to reflect his mood, the love and commitment the Professor showed by dedicating himself to creating a mate for the Whangdoodle, and the profound joy the Whangdoodle experienced when he finally met his bride. This work teaches us so much more than the typical "child retreats into fantasy world to work out his/her issues" book. While it does a remarkable job on that plane, it also touches on the unspeakable but very real problem of the extinction of species in our world, suggesting that if science puts its magical hats on, it might find a solution. It also offers us the assurance that even though the prospects look bleak, there IS a mate out there for each of us. I recommend this book to anyone who can read, young or old. Please read it. If nothing else, it goes fast and can't help but lift your spirits a litte.
