Summary: No Worries
Comment: It probably is strange to see how some people only give the book 2 stars and find it a big disappointment, while others say it is his best one yet... Terry writes far more than 1 book-a-year which sometimes shows in his work. If you are a die-hard Discworld fan, you can't help noticing that Pratchett is getting less original all the time. But he has to repeat things, because non-Discworld fans have to be able to read the books as well. It is pretty weird to assume everone knows about a world standing on the back of a turtle; these things need to be explained over and over again. BUT in this book Mr. Pratchett doesn't write about most of his 'clichees', but about an entire new continent (XXXX for the fans) and still people (Discworld-fans!!) complain. A bit australianish as the cover says, but still very nice to read.

Still no worries eh?

Summary: Quite a fun read
Comment: Being Australian, I was a little worried that non-Australians might not get many of the Aussie-themed jokes and cultural references -- fortunately, this seems not to be the case. (Although, having met Terry at a book-signing for "Last Continent", he was at pains to find out if I had picked up all of the Oz-references, and was delighted that I had, so he obviously took a great deal of care and did much research for them).

Last Continent is an interesting mix of Pratchett's usual style, with slightly more characters and slightly fewer clear plot points than normal. As a result, there is less of a "story" to follow but more fun people and more scope for one-liners. I found it slightly less enjoyable than, say, "Hogfather" (roughly of the order of "Jingo", which had more of a moral and political tinge to it) but still a very fun read.

Readers new to Pratchett should probably read the other Rincewind books (particularly "Colour of Magic" and "Light Fantastic") to get a feel for the main characters, as knowledge of their personalities adds a great deal to the enjoyment of this book. Reading it cold would probably give a bit of a distorted feel for the series. And remember, if RIncewind is not your bag (baby), there's always the Guards series (my favourite -- try "Small Gods") or the witches (try "Equal Rites").

Summary: Painfully funny! A tad bit shallow I suppose ...?
Comment: Many die-hard DiscWorld fans might note that this book does not have as much depth as others in the series, but it certainly does not take away from the humour.

I have read 5 books in the series and found this to be the most fun read. Several of the wizards from Unseen University are in the book for a substantial part, and I they were absolutely hilarious. I had to stop reading at several parts just to catch my breath from laughing so hard (and no, I'm not a smoker, or out of shape). The island they are on, and their personalities are so incredibly creative... and Pratchett milks the situations for all they're worth (in a good way)... he just doesn't miss a beat.

Rincewind's adventures are also, as usual, terribly humorous... He finds himself in a remarkably Australian-esqe continent, and gets caught up in the middle of several cultural misunderstandings...

If you just want a fun read, and some hilarious situations, then pick up The Last Continent... and sorry for my ramblings.
