Summary: A truer view of Iraq
Comment: After reading Mohammed Odeh al-Rehaief's account of life in Iraq during Saddam Hussein's reign, I have a more complete picture of the perils of absolute power run amuck. Life in Iraq during those years more closely resembled the worst aspects of Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia than anything else.
It is heartening that in spite of growing up in such a fearful and hatefilled backdrop that the author chose to risk everything that he had, his possessions, his family, even his own life to save a total stranger; a young woman wearing the uniform of a country he had been told was his enemy. His accounts of how the personnel of the 507th Maintenance Company were caught in the ambush on March 23, some even executed while in the act of surrendering, of how Jessica Lynch's best friend had been shot, and of how Jessica herself was savagely beaten with rifle butts by Iraq soldiers after she had been pulled out of the vehicle she was in are chilling.
The author's accounts correspond with what I have learned in the course of a six and a half month investigation into what really happened to PFC Jessica Lynch while she was held captive. It is very clear that the US Army's account of how Jessica Lynch was injured is seriously flawed, particularly with the growing number of accounts by Rod Nordland, Don Gentile and this book's author describing the initial beatings of Jessica. It is becoming more and more clear that her injuries are not as the result of the wreck of the vehicle that she was in. Unfortunately, this book does not tell what happened to her in the hours after Jessica's initial capture when she was first taken with her friend Lori Ann Piestewa to a nearby house, then some hours later taken to a small military hospital before finally ending up at Saddam Hospital where Mohammed Odeh al-Rehaief saw her being abused again. It is painfully obvious that far more and worse things were done to Jessica during her captivity that this book does not talk about.
Still this book offers up a shining example of humanity in a backdrop of terrifying events. The future of Islam does not lies with the cries for hatred, killing, jihad and suicide bombers. It is with love, tolerance, self-sacrifice and compassion as shown by Mohammed Odeh al-Rehaief towards a battered, terrified young woman named Jessica. He truly exemplified God's will with his actions.

Summary: Inspiring
Comment: I was drawn to this book by the cover and that's often such a misleading reason to buy a book but I did anyway - and was captivated by this story. The story of Mohammed's life in Iraq before Sadam Hussein was driven from power gives us insight into just how oppressive the Baathist regime was to the people of Iraq. Mohammed survives an incredible ordeal during the peak of U.S. military action in Iraq to lead American soldiers to the hospital where Jessica Lynch was being held. He loses one eye to shrapnel from a rocket and still has no regrets.
The humble and precise title answers the question "why would this Iraqi man named Mohammed risk his life and his family's life for someone he didn't even know"? Why risk capture and certain death by the Fedayeen who watched his suspicious activity so carefully?
I so loved this story because human to human there is more to bind us than separate us. Where few Islamic extremists have given us fear of muslims, this wonderful story offers us the real insight into the core teachings of the Koran....... each life is precious.
Read this and savor it for it's humanity at it's worst and best all woven into one series of truly heroic events.

Summary: Destined To Be a Classic
Comment: This book is destined to be a classic, in several genres. If you start reading it, be sure you can afford the time to read it all the way through -- it's hard to set down. The opening is intense, yet the reader's hope that that level might be sustained is exceeded -- the story just keeps getting more gripping.
It's an adventure story, history, humor, sociology, a spiritual journey, and a patriotic work all together (it'll make you proud to be an American).
Mr. Al-Rehaief has done more single-handedly to redeem the Arab culture than all of the rest combined.
