Summary: Must be Taken at Face Value
Comment: Bernard Goldberg does a thorough job examining the liberal bias in mainstream media. However "folksy" and anectdote-riddled his writing may be, the point of this text comes across very well. He is adept at spotting subtle "bias" in news (and entertainment, though to a lesser extent) and manages to introduce the reader to what, exactly, makes a news report biased.
Unfortunately, my biggest problem with this book was also one of its strongest points. As it is written from Goldberg's own experience in the media (28 years at CBS), this book also becomes a forum for Goldberg to speak personally about those who has encountered in the news media. While this serves to essentially present the reader with a first-hand account of the perceived bias, it also tends to bias this text itself, as well.
Another drawback to this book was the manner in which it is written. Rather than citing (perhaps in a more dry, scholarly manner) instances of evident "bias" in the media (though you don't have to look much further than your own local television station), Goldberg writes the same as he would hold a conversation. It makes for light reading. The lack of intellectual stimuli from this book, however, can be overcome: This book is meant to fuel contemplation, not to think *for* you. In this arena, it accomplishes its task quite well.
However rudimentary this introduction is, it still does make some very strong points. Goldberg is able to articulate many different points about bias in the news - ie, there obviously shouldn't be a left-leaning bias, but, of course, there also shouldn't be a right-leaning bias evident in the news, either. He speaks without any clear alliance to the "right" or "left," however "right" he may be.

Summary: The Hypocrisy of Liberals
Comment: Bernard Goldberg has done a great service in the writing of this book. He is one of a handful of honest liberals out there who not only sees the hypocrisy in leftist media bias, but knows that it is WRONG. He understands that the Left may be irreparably harmed as more people realize the shocking extent to which the media have been engaging in the most insidious forms of censorship and propaganda, but he has the integrity and decency to tell the truth.
Why are liberals so afraid of the truth in news? Because the Left is no longer an intellectual entity. Many of their issues and causes have become so flimsy and irrelevant that they would simply cease to exist if statistics were honestly reported and opposing voices were accorded equal time.
Those who wish to believe that Mr. Goldberg's book is nothing more than sour grapes would do well to read "COLORING THE NEWS," and exposé of bias in the print media, written by William McGowan, an apolitical and unbiased journalist who believes that journalism fails when it is biased, and "THE NEW THOUGHT POLICE," by Tammy Bruce, a gay, liberal, former talk show-host who is disturbed by the fact that the Left can no longer present their issues in an atmosphere of discourse, but can only win support by completely and unfairly shutting down any debate from the other side.
The potent effect of liberal media bias is most simply illustrated by liberals themselves who are the only ones who believe that FoxNews is conservative. They are so used to agreeing with what they see and read in the media, that when both sides are equally presented, they see it as wildly right wing.
It is a sad day for the Left. If I were a liberal, I'd be very angry for I'd have to question how much of what I believed was based on media propaganda rather than the truth. Fortunately, conservatives don't have to wonder about that.

Summary: Poorly-written, nonetheless extremely important and gutsy
Comment: This book is not very graceful. The prose is childish. Goldberg often uses profanity. And there is not much of a flow to the argument.
However, I still think that this book is extremely important - and Bernard Goldberg is a very courageous man. It is true that the media is very arrogant and very tiltied to the left. We've all known it for years. Now, one of the insiders who has personal experience has confirmed what we've all known all along.
The book offers a behind-the-scenes look at CBS News. It affords us an extremely important perspective on an important issue of our time. I would recommend it to anyone - conservative or liberal.
