Summary: Excellent Book But Was Released With Tapes
Comment: The Good: As the title I gave this review states this is an excellent book. It was published, at the time of this review, thirty-six years ago in 1968. The book is written for a native American English speaking audience learning the Spanish language. The book goes into detail on the errors American English speakers may make in pronouncing a language which basically uses the same 'looking' alphabet as their own English language.

The Bad: This book was released with tapes. Reference to the tapes are made throughout the book. List of words are given throughout the book and the reader is supposed to listen to the words repeated on the tapes. In many cases the list present a comparison of how a word is pronounced in English and how the same word is pronounced in Spanish . So without the tapes the book very quickly loses its usefulness. The book can still be useful to some extent without the tapes, but then it really only becomes useful to the hard core learner of the Spanish language.

The Ugly: This was most likely a university type textbook and not sold to the general public. I did a search for the tapes in the last few years and some universities list the tapes as being in their possession but I had no success in locating a university willing to get me a copy of them. One reason given to me for lack of assistance was copyright law. Well, I own the book and the tapes go with the book. Also, after thirty-six years it is doubtful the publisher or authors would be concerned if someone helped someone else get a hold of tapes that go with a thirty-six year old out-of-print book. Still, after thirty-six years it would be hard to say what the quality of the tapes would be if one were able to obtain them. If anyone is able to help me obtain a copy of the tapes that go with the book please contact me at: charlie at adnmail dot com.

I purchased my copy of 'A Drillbook of Spanish Pronunciation' from a seller on Amazon. It is a shame a book of this quality was allowed to go out-of-print.
