Summary: Beginner Catholicism..
Comment: I read this book a few months ago at a time when I was very eager to learn more about my religious roots, because I was sick of feeling ignorant about it all the time. Over the past year, I've gone to church more and more often and I still felt like I needed brushing up. This book was the ticket. It was extremely approachable, as the author does not assume that you know anything about Catholicism. It also seemed sensitive in its cultural approaches to the religion and does not come off as hard-nosed as you would think that a book of this type may. The layout of the book is superb as well, allowing you to use it as a light reference source too. I read it straight through, but the book lends itself well to skipping things you already know, etc. I recommend this book to "complete idiots" like myself who may have been slightly out of touch with Catholicism for awhile or do not fully understand all of its teachings. Buy it with the Catechism of the Catholic Church so that you can explore different topics in greater detail.

Summary: Get the Dummies book instead
Comment: O'Gorman's book is vastly inferior to the better-selling and superb "Catholicism for Dummies" by Fr. John Trigilio and Fr. Kenneth Brighenti.
The "Idiot's" book is full of the author's opinions on topics like ordination and sexuality and light on the four pillars of the Faith: Creed, Sacraments, Commandments and Prayer.
The authors also make dubious claims about the validity of the virgin birth, claiming that in ancient cultures "virginity was associated with autonomy and did not have physical or moral connotations". That doesn't square with history, the Gospel writers accounts or the continuous 2,000 year teaching of the Church.
By contrast, the "Dummies" book is a user-friendly catechism that presents authentic Catholic teaching in laymen's terms.
Skip the "Idiot's" book and buy "Catholicism for Dummies".

Summary: Watch out for errors
Comment: While the book gives a good idea of what the Catholic faith is, I noted after buying the book that it has some grave errors in its interpretation of Vatican II council documents. It tends to water-down the faith, which does not make the faith more attractive to non-believers--just more vague.
As a Catholic, I was disappointed at the authors' explanation of the sacraments and other beliefs..sometimes, they label as "mythology" what is in reality a "mystery." They also do not expound clearly on the mysteries of the Incarnation (i.e. When the 2nd person of the Trinity becomes true Man) and other dogmas of the faith.
I would not recommend this book to fellow Catholics, who are trying to understand their faith better.
