Summary: Better left unwritten
Comment: Having read Philip Glazebrook's marvellous Journey to Kars, in which mention is made ever so often of this present book as something yet to be written, I had great expectations for the novel. Alas! it seems all the good bits were much better used and rendered in the travel book, and the novel is not only incredibly boring to read, but also an utter mess of a text. What claim it has to model itself after Victorian texts, while some of them certainly were pompous and convoluted in extreme, the best very not - needless to say, by far the best thing would had the book never been written; as it is, the second best thing is not to read it. I regret of getting my copy - still, at least I now dont have any fancy illusion as to a marvellous book hard to find. And perhaps a banal reality does better here than the chiaroscuro of romance - for that, and well written facts as well, one finds all that in the Kars book (incidentally, Glazebrook's Central Asian journey did not fare much better as a book than Captain Vinegar's Commission; and now I have great apprehension to its sequel: The Gate at the End of the World - but it cannot get any worse, surely).
